One of the nicest wartime service game programs, this 1943 Hammond General Hospital( fund raiser All-Star game featured two future Hall of Fame players who were serving in the armed forces (Chevrons and Diamonds Collection).

Though the cover and internal line-up page refers to the opponent as the San Francisco Seals, the actual team consisted of a predominance of the aforementioned team augmented with other Coast League players. Perhaps the game was intended to be played by the Seals but after the completion of the Coast League season in September, several of the players may have returned home to their families and off-season employment. The Service All-Stars were drawn from California-area armed forces bases with the exception of DiMaggio who came from the Santa Ana Army Air Bases in Southern California to headline the team. The Yankee Clipper’s appearance may also have coincided with a leave-period and a visit to his San Francisco hometown.

The 1943 Hammond General Hospital fundraiser All-Star game program (Chevrons and Diamonds Collection).

The game was played before 6,000 fans in Stockton, California yet the venue remains unknown at present. No box score has been discovered during our research though several newspapers published brief game recaps (see: A Patient Find: Joe and Charlie Headline 1943 Hammond General Hospital Game).

The program/scorecard is mixed paper with a cardstock cover and lightweight paper internal pages, affixed by two staples in the fold. Condition of the program is excellent with no creases or dogeared corners. The only detractor is the rust stains surrounding the staples.

The centerfold of the Hammond game features Joe DiMaggio and Charlie Gehringer, both future Hall of Fame enshrinees (Chevrons and Diamonds Collection).

This program is a booklet with six interior pages of content with the centerfold spotlighting DiMaggio and Gehringer along with the beneficiary of the funds raised from the game (Hammond General Hospital).

This scorecard was acquired in November, 2020 from an online auction.
