Sampson’s 1944 season was entering its third month as June switched over to July. With an 11-0 record, including a 20-7 victory over the Red Sox in early June, Sampson was set to face Boston’s National League Braves on June 26. Two days later, Sampson’s schedule had them matched up with the station’s hospital club before their June 29 contest against the class “A” Eastern League’s Scranton Miners.

The Braves handed Sampson their first loss, beating pitchers Hal White and Jim Davis. In his only big league season, Stanley Klopp hurled the Braves to the 6-3 victory. Sampson’s Barney Lutz was the leading Sampson hitter legging out a triple and smashing a double.

After downing their station rivals 10-1, the Sampsons ran former Cincinnati hurler Johnny Vander Meer to the hill to face Scranton. Downing the Miners 11-3, “Vandy” won his fifth straight contest for Sampson
