When the Cleveland Indians paid a visit to Sampson, the 14-1 sailors outscored their opponents 158-38. More than 10,000 sailors packed the stands to watch Vander Meer hold the Tribe to two runs while the Sampson batters pounded out 15 runs on 14 hits on starter Vernon Kennedy.
Two days later, the Sampson battery of Jim Davis and Tony Ravish stymied the bats of the class “AA” International League Buffalo Bisons.
