A month into the 1944 season, the St. Louis Browns paid a visit to Norfolk’s McClure Field to face the Bluejackets (Chevrons and Diamonds Collection).

The largest of the Norfolk NTS game programs/scorecards, the 1944 pieces are printed on heavy cardstock. Pictured on the cover of this edition is a photo of the main entrance to McClure Field and the dedication plaque to the right of the arch. Historic McClure Field still stands at the Norfolk Naval Station and is one of the oldest ballparks left standing.

The single sheet is printed on monochrome black ink and is bi-folded with rosters and scoring grids on each panel of the interior. Jersey numbers, positions and former experience as well as statistics are also provided.

The NNTS Bluejackets were on a 19-game winning streak when the eventual American League champions visited Norfolk the day before facing the Senators in DC. The 13-5 Browns held a 1.5 game lead over the Yankees as they took the field against the strong Norfolk team for an exhibition game. Eddie Robinson led Norfolk’s hit parade accounting for three of the Navy’s 13. Robinson drove in three, and stole a base. Tommy Byrne stymied Browns hitters, holding them to four runs on as many hits. Byrne struck out five and walked four. St. Louis sent a pair of pitchers to the mound starting with Weldon West and Al La Macchia with the latter taking the loss for the Browns.

The paper of this program is slightly discolored due to aging and has some staining on the cover yet the overall condition is quite good.
