Bearing the signature of the endorsing player, the Hillerich and Bradsby bats carrying the catalog number 40 are the second tier of retail bats beneath the 125. To the right of the center brand, these bats are stamped with “Tempered” or “Oil Tempered.” Above the autograph is the service marking (with the exception of bats marked for the Professional Base Ball Fund. Below the autograph, this model of bats bears either “Louisville Slugger,” with or without “Genuine.”

Showing significant loss of the black foil stamp, this 40LGS Lou Gehrig model bat is seldom seen on the market. The “U.S. Army” stamp is visible above the autograph (Chevrons and Diamonds Collection).
Perhaps the most scarce of the wartime service bats are those procured through the Professional Base Ball Fund. Two of the three bats shown are 40 bats (the bottom photo shows the George “Babe” Ruth and Stanley Hack models) along with three of the Fund’s marked baseballs (Chevrons and Diamonds Collection).
