From the start of the 1944 season, the Aiea Naval Hospital “Hilltoppers” were the odds-on favorite to capture the Central Pacific Area (CPA) League crown and and were well on their way during the first half of play. However, by June, the 7th Army Air Force received a substantial infusion of talent from the mainland West Coast that was predominated by major league talent. As the season continued, the 7th added former Yankees Joe Gordon and Red Ruffing to their squad. Aiea captured the first half championship and in the second half. fought neck-and-neck with the 7th.
This scorecard dates to the end of the first half of the CPA season as Aiea was locking up the title. The 7th AAF featured three future Hall of Fame inductees (Joe Gordon, Red Ruffing and Joe DiMaggio) yet the Hilltoppers remained in contention as the season wound down.
This game saw Aiea’s Jim Carlin opposed by Al Lien at Furlong Field. Olsen wen the distance allowing nine scattered hits, walking four and fanning six airmen. Olsen was knocked around in the first three innings as all four of the 7th’s runs scored in the first three innings on seven hits. From the fourth though the ninth, Olsen was nearly unhittable allowing two safeties.
Al Lien lasted 6-2/3 innings, allowing two runs. He was relieved by Bill Schmidt with two outs in the seventh who closed the book on the inning. However, in the eighth, Schmidt got himself into trouble walking two batters. With one out, Schmidt walked Eddie Shokes. Winsett pulled the reliver after he had a 2-0 count on Pee Wee Reese to bring in Don Schmidt (no relation) who ended the threat.
With the score tied in the bottom of the ninth, Jim Carlin took Don Schmidt deep to right field to win the game for Aiea, 5-4.
