The Marine Corps Barracks at Quantico served as a training facility for officers and provided technical training for enlisted personnel. The installation fielded a ball team, comprised of both officers and enlisted that by the mid-1920s was competing in a collegiate league on the eastern seaboard. After World War II, the Quantico Marines’ schedule was effectively split into two seasons. In the first half from March 31 to May 22, opponents were entirely colleges and universities. From May 24 to August 22, the Marines faced regional service teams.

After capturing the east coast and Atlantic Fleet championships, the Quantico Marines hosted the Pacific Area champion Pearl Harbor Submarine Base “SubPac” nine for the All-Navy championship. After trading wins in the first two games, Quantico catcher George Farrell launched a grand slam homerun in the late innings of the third and clinching game to claim the crown.
