During the dog days of summer, the Pirates, following a four-game home stand with the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates made stop in Maryland to play an exhibition game against the Bainbridge Naval Training Center’s “Commodores” before continuing on to Philadelphia to face the Phillies.
With foul whether looming over the event, the two teams squared off and completed eight innings before the rain began to fall forcing the game to be called with the score tied. The Pirates sent Xavier Rescigno to the mound to square off against Sidney West. Bainbridge got to Rescigno early plating their first run in the bottom of the second. Pirates batters evened the score, tallying their first run in the top of the fifth but were countered in the bottom of the frame as the Commodores added a run. After tying the score in the top of the sixth, Pittsburgh pulled ahead in the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth as the skies began to open, Bainbridge evened the score at three runs.

Our scorecard is a single sheet, monochrome black ink with a bi-fold. The inside pages feature the lineups and scoring grinds and the back page includes the team rosters and season stats. Conditionally, this scarce piece is excellent slightly dog-eared corners and no creases though some wrinkles are present. While the grid is unused, an incorrect score (“6-6”) was noted in pencil.

This scorecard was acquired in October 2022.
