By the time that the 1945 14 Naval District season got underway in early May, the majority of the 1944 season’s stars were playing for the benefit of combat troops in the Western Pacific. Newcomers to Navy baseball in Hawaii included Billy Herman, Bob Lemon, Fred Hutchinson, Stan Musial, Ted Williams, Rollie Hemsley and Johnny Pesky.
The season’s first half ran from May 6 through June 20. Following a weeklong mid-season break, play resumed on 27 June and ran through September 16. Ten days later, the Navy assembled all of their players, divided them by their former professional team’s league affiliation for the Navy World Series.
