Great Lakes’ hurler Tom Ferrick pitched nine-innings of two-hit ball, blanking the United Auto Workers local 13 at Michigan College’s diamond on August 19, 1943 in a 8-0 shutout. Bluejackets’ third baseman Carl Fiore accounted for half of the Navy’s offense with a 3-4 plate performance and scoring two runs and driving in two more. Fiore’s defense production was slightly tainted as he committed one of the two Great Lakes errors. Joe Grace and Barney McCosky were two for five and Johnny Mize hit twice in six at-bats. Manager Lieutenant Gordon “Mickey” Cochrane got in on the action with an RBI-single late in the game in front of 4,500 spectators.
